Powers and abilities: Ethan is a vampire, which means he is able to heal from nearly everything overnight. His body reverts to what it was when he died, which makes him impossible to scar. He has greater strength and speed than a human, is able to see in pitch darkness, can smell blood from across a household, and can hear heartbeats through walls.
This also means he is susceptible to sunlight, beheading, stake through the heart and truly terrible, heinously severe injuries.
Personality: The first impression Ethan gives is of a friendly, fresh-faced 20 year old just making his way through college. In most respects this is completely accurate: he is friendly, and he loves learning so he takes classes wherever he settles down for a few years.
Underneath all that, though, he is a vampire. He never gives specifics on how old he is, but he's been one long enough to have lost his French accent, to have had at least two well-established false identities, and to have fully assimilated into American culture.
Despite his age, he isn't cynical. Now that he's immortal, his only real concern is survival, and when that's assured he does his best to repay any debts he has. He tries to deal fairly with people, even those he feeds on. He enjoys movies, goes to parties, keeps up on current events, and befriends humans. Since he only needs "a little more" than what a person donates to the Red Cross, he chooses to 'date' his donors and to take their blood consensually. This is helpful, too, because he's incapable of feeding on animal blood or from blood bags--all fresh right from the source for this guy.
When you start to get to know him, though, he's a little harder to pin down. He goes out of his way to be considerate, but if you press him on any details of his life before you met him, he'll offer conflicting stories and unpredictable reactions. Some of this he does for fun: he likes seeing what people do when they catch him in a contradictory origin story.
He is loyal to the other vampires in his canon, despite living apart from them (too many vampires in one place is a liability). Asking for details on vampire life will earn the same incompatible stories and performances that asking about his history gets.
Once he learns that he doesn't have to toy with or control a narrative, however, he becomes deeply loyal, willing to risk himself to keep someone else safe.
Reactions to Lovewater: Ethan is a well-mannered hedonist. He enjoys people, he enjoys sex, he enjoys feeding (which he describes as being on par with sex). He'll find it easy to be outgoing in Lovewater, especially when he realizes that he won't be staked or beheaded if anyone discovers his secret.
He will still try to keep his vampirism very quiet, and only reveal it to those who agree to let him feed, however. Old habits die hard.
He'll also attempt to help people adjust to the setting, once he's become established. The more people having fun, the safer he can keep Kerry and her family.
History: Ethan's first entrance in canon is as a kidnapped, terrified college student. He presents himself this way to teenaged Kerry, in the hopes she'll help him escape his captors. In reality he was abducted by vampire hunters after killing one of them. That's a pattern in his life: he becomes what he needs to be to keep himself and other vampires safe and secret.
We learn he spends his evenings with another vampire, Regina, until she is murdered by a rogue vampire hunter. After that his mission becomes finding the man responsible, killing him, and then escaping to another city to set up a new life.
His canon takes place over a little under a week, which means what we learn about him is limited to what he slips up and shares: he was French once, his real name is Michel, he spends his time as a college student in different cities to pass the time and stay up to date on current events.
Sample 1: [Ethan is fresh out of the shower, cleanly shaved and with damp hair, a towel draped over his shoulders.] I'll get the obvious but less socially acceptable question out of the way: What is your go-to toy, and why? Personally, I'm torn between a nice heavy flogger and hemp ropes. Mm, no, now that I think about it, it's the rope. It's so intimate, and you really have to take your time to do it well. There's an art behind it.
Now that we're acquainted, how many of you are from New York?
Brockport, here. If you haven't heard of it, no one else has, either. It's a college town, but you only go to school there for the parties. [A guilty smile] I'm majoring in beer pong.
But I'm minoring in journalism. Hence all these intrusive questions.
What else... oh, how many of you are, or believe in, the supernatural? Any compelling ghost stories out there? I'm afraid all of mine are straight out of the Goosebumps series. I do find Dracula a funny figure, though. One of the few enduring tales--which fits, doesn't it, with him being immortal and all? If I try to tell you that anyone can outdo Bela Lugosi's performance, though, the cinematic nerds from back home will bind me up with my own rope. And then if I defend him, all of Lestat's fans will come for me with the floggers.
